Bring a Dramatic Flair to Your Event with Snapdragons

Snapdragons are exotic, dramatic flowers that make an incredible addition to any centerpiece or bouquet. Because they are available in a fantastic array of bright colors including yellow, burgundy, red, pink, orange and bronze, snapdragons present a fabulous alternative to more traditional flower choices.

Snapdragons, part of the Plantaginaceae family, are found in three sizes: dwarf, which is 6-8 inches, medium, which is 15-30 inches, and tall, which is 30-48 inches tall. The tall snapdragons in particular are perfect for flower arrangements. They have received their common name based on their exquisite flower which resembles the face of a dragon. As this flower is gently squeezed it opens and closes its "mouth", and lets out a snapping sound as a dragon does. This fun characteristic makes snapdragons a playful addition to any centerpiece or bouquet and a favorite flower among children.

While Snapdragons are playful, they are also seen as exotic and romantic. Native to the Mediterranean, their crisp white, dazzling yellow and rich crimson flowers speckle the Mediterranean coast and are found throughout France, Italy, Malta, and even Israel. They have been used since the time of the ancient Romans as a decorative flower and were sought after by noblemen and statesmen throughout the Roman Empire. When used as a centerpiece for a wedding or special occasion, snapdragons add a romantic flavor reminiscent of the sunny Greek islands.

When planting snapdragons, it is best to plant them two to three weeks prior to the frost free date. Snapdragons can grow anywhere with full sun exposure or partial shade. It is best to remove all dead flowers and cut the snaps back to a height of approximately six inches in the middle of the summer. By doing so, the snapdragons will regenerate, blossom and bloom once again.

Snapdragons produce an exquisite flower that enlivens both home and garden alike. They also offer a dramatic, unusual addition to centerpieces, wedding bouquets and flower arrangements that every guest or bouquet recipient will cherish.
